Otis, The School Dog

Reading Dog - Christ Church (Erith) C of E Primary School

We have recently got a school therapy reading dog and I wondered if you would be able to run an article about him?

In July 2016, Christ Church (Erith) C of E Primary School welcomed Otis to join the school as our reading dog. We chose a labradoodle due to their smart and affectionate nature. Additionally, they have hypo-allergenic hair. Otis is a very sociable dog who brings a smile to each of the children’s faces.  Otis’ job as a reading dog is to join classes for story time, as well as listen to children read independently to him. This helps children to build their confidence to read aloud. Not only is he a reading dog, Otis is a calming influence on our pupils when they might need some time to reflect or step away from a situation. Pupils relax around Otis and can speak to him freely. Furthermore, Otis is frequently walked by pupils alongside a member of staff, which the pupils and Otis enjoy greatly. Otis is a great addition to the Christ Church team.

This November, Otis will be taking part in "Annie the Musical" at the STaG Theatre, Sevenoaks.
