Rochester's December Blog 17/12/20
This half term we have been learning about writing narratives. We learned about how to use a variety of clause structures and high level punctuation to ensure that our stories were exciting and created tension. We also practised using dialogue to move stories along. We used all of these skills to write a Christmas narrative inspired by the story 'Mog's Christmas calamity!'
In maths this half term we have been learning about fractions, we have been adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions. We have also been learning about fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents and using these skills to solve problems.
During worship year 6 created an advent calendar and wrote prayers for the world. We wrote prayers for Love, Peace, Joy and Hope.
In Music we listened to traditional Nigerian music and traditional English music and compared the two. We found that there was a difference in the instruments, style of singing and tempo.
We also learned about the history of music in the 20th century. We learned about the different genres and listened to some of the most popular songs from 1930- present day including Abba, The Beatles, Chic, Otis Redding and Elvis Presley.
We designed and planned the making of a new Christmas decoration for 2020! We had a design criteria which included a part that used an electrical circuit. We used our knowledge from our science lessons this half term to help us.
In science we have been learning about Electricity. We started by learning about the discovery of electricity and how it has changed our lives! We practised drawing circuits and revised the symbols for the different components.
Then we conducted an experiment to find out what would happen to a bulb if we increased the voltage in a circuit. We found that it can alter the brightness of a bulb but if the voltage is too high, the bulb can break!
In Rochester we have been using the young minds advent calendar. On the 16th December our task was to create festive hats, this was perfect timing because it meant we could design and make a hat to wear to our Christmas Party!
