Art and Design

Intent

At Christ Church our Art & Design Curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Art & Design at Christ Church is an important part of developing our pupil’s ability to enhance their individual creativity, express their ideas and understanding and to work both individually and collaboratively.

Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Pupils learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work, and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. They are introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

In Art & Design, pupils are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. Art & Design enables pupils to express themselves in an imaginative manner through exploration. All pupils are challenged in the curriculum to reach their full potential. Art & Design will also develop pupils’ individuality, allowing them to think and express themselves with confidence, equipping them with essential life skills. Pupils are involved in projects which result in them responding positively and creatively to the community.

Implementation

Art & Design is taught throughout EYFS. KS1 and KS2. We use the content of the National Curriculum and EYFS Statutory Framework to underpin teaching and learning. Opportunities are planned for pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.  At Christ Church we follow the CUSP curriculum scheme of work in KS1 and KS2., which is organised into blocks. Each block covers a particular set of expressions, including textiles, collage, painting, drawing, sculpting and printmaking. Vertical progression in each discipline has been deliberately woven into the fabric of the curriculum so that pupils revisit each throughout their Primary journey at increasing degrees of challenge.

In Early Years Foundation stage, pupils will use different media and materials to express their own ideas. They will explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials through continuous provision.

All Pupils’ learning is further enhanced through whole school events when Art & Design is linked with other subjects to give the children opportunities for collaborative working and exploring different styles and techniques of Art & Design.

We promote Art & Design in the wider school through an after-school club. During these sessions’ children are able to express themselves through different art forms such as painting, designing and collaging.  Pupils are also given termly projects allowing their artistic talents to develop.

Impact

We want pupils to have found and enjoyed a creative outlet – a means of self-expression and enjoyment. Our intention is that the quality-first teacher instruction inspires pupils to acquire knowledge as artists and enables them to skilfully apply their understanding of different art forms. Ongoing assessment takes place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately.

By the time children leave year 6 they will:

  • Completed sketch books recording their observations, artistic expressions, using them to review and revisit ideas

  • Improved their mastery of Art and Design, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]

  • Learnt about great artists and architects in history.
