Religious Education (RE)

Intent

At Christ Church, our Religious Education (RE) program is driven by an ambitious vision aimed at empowering every pupil as a unique child of God. We believe deeply in the inherent worth of each individual as a cherished creation of God, deserving of the recognition and development of their distinct talents and abilities. Through our curriculum and approach, we seek to instill curiosity, exploration, and a profound understanding of faith, spirituality, and moral reasoning, fostering empathy, respect, and appreciation for diverse religious and cultural perspectives within our school community.

Intentions:

  • Empower each pupil as a unique child of God

  • Recognize and cultivate individual talents and abilities

  • Inspire curiosity, exploration, and understanding of faith and spirituality

  • Foster empathy, respect, and appreciation for diverse perspectives

  • Celebrate the diversity within our school community

  • Create a safe, enjoyable, and creative Christian atmosphere

  • Encourage the development of curious minds

  • Instil Christian Values to guide pupils throughout their lives

Implementation

At Christ Church, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is guided by an ambitious vision, emphasizing diversity, balance, and innovation. Drawing inspiration from the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, we strive to create a diverse and balanced learning environment that encourages exploration and creativity. From Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6, our curriculum is designed to offer ambitious opportunities for pupils to delve into various religions, fostering a deep understanding of spirituality and cultural diversity.  We use the Diocese of Rochester RE Syllabus as the foundation of our RE curriculum. We will:

  • Implement innovative teaching methods such as role play, debates, and personal sharing experiences

  • Integrate cultural capital throughout teaching to expose pupils to diverse beliefs and practices

  • Adapt our RE curriculum to address contemporary issues and global events with sensitivity and compassion

  • Seize opportunities like festivals and holidays to explore their significance and rituals

  • Incorporate current events and charity initiatives into collective worship to make learning relevant and engaging

  • Organize workshops such as the God and Big Bang workshop to provide authentic learning experiences

  • Provide adaptive teaching resources reflecting the diversity of religious beliefs and practices

  • Facilitate open discussions and debates on ethical dilemmas and contemporary issues

  • Encourage independent research, group projects, and collaborative learning experiences

  • Employ formative assessment strategies to gauge understanding and adjust teaching approaches as needed

Impact

At Christ Church, our intentional approach to Religious Education (RE) goes beyond fostering a strong foundation in Christian Values; it cultivates a profound respect and understanding of diverse religious and cultural perspectives among our pupils. Through structured learning experiences and active participation, our pupils develop empathy, critical thinking skills, and a deep sense of community, preparing them for a purposeful and fulfilling life grounded in spiritual awareness and service to others.

  • Pupils demonstrate understanding of School Values in practice, such as Joy and Forgiveness

  • Assessment methods like low stakes quizzes and review tasks track pupil progress, ensuring comprehensive learning

  • Progression in RE concepts from reception to Year 6 builds a thorough understanding over time

  • Parent participation in school activities such as Class Assemblies led by children in school and at Church, fosters community engagement and reinforces learning

  • Pupils exhibit spiritual reflection, emotional regulation, and inclusivity through the diverse curriculum

  • Pupil worship leaders demonstrate confidence in their beliefs and values, leading with purpose

  • Development of prayer spaces promotes spiritual well-being and self-regulation

  • RE curriculum empowers pupils to embrace lifelong learning and celebrate diversity

  • Implementation of "know more, remember more, do more" approach enhances learning outcomes and pupil engagement
