Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At Christ Church we are committed to ensuring that all pupils access and participate in a broad and balanced PE curriculum. This is done through careful lesson planning and adaptation to make sure that all children, including those who have special educational needs, disabilities, English as an additional language or those who are gifted and talented are included and engaged.
The skills of Physical Education (PE) are essential skills for life-long learning. We aim to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved.
It is our intent to inspire children to discover life skills that will positively impact on their future. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Implementation
Our aim is to ensure that we fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum for PE including:
Developing competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
Being physically active for sustained periods of time
Engaging in competitive sports and activities
Leading healthy, active lives
In EYFS, PE is one of the Prime Areas of Learning and underpins the development of other skills such as reading, writing and attention. As such, it is given lots of focus and is encouraged using both the indoor and outdoor provision. Specific areas and resources have been developed for children to learn and practise explicit skills including balancing, climbing, jumping, throwing and catching, kicking and moving in a range of ways. They also access a PE lesson each week which focuses on developing a particular skill using a varied range of equipment including benches, balls, mats and climbing apparatus. Emphasis is put on creating fun and enjoyable sessions for the children which aim to inspire a love of sport and physical activity. Children are given opportunities during their PE lessons and appropriate activities within provision to observe and discuss the physical effects that being active has on their bodies. They are encouraged to talk about how they link to 'being healthy'. Adults plan focus activities during the academic year which enable the children to explore a range of foods and develop an understanding of which are healthy or unhealthy and the reasons why.
At Christ Church we use Teach PE to deliver a broad, creative and inclusive curriculum for all children. We give all children opportunities to compete in sport and other challenging activities which build character and help embed values such as fairness, respect and teamwork. Children should be prepared for the next step in their learning and life journey and be in a position to participate fully in the sporting and active opportunities in education and beyond. In KS1 and KS2 children are taught two PE sessions a week teaching a variety of invasion games, dance or gymnastics. Children build on the fundamental skills taught in EYFS and aim to master basic skill movements such as running, throwing, jumping and catching as well as beginning to develop balance, agility and coordination. Pupils are introduced to team games as well as individual sports. Basic tactics are introduced to the children as well as competitive sports whether that be competing against other children, teams or themselves. All pupils are given additional opportunities to develop skills in extracurricular activities, these include coaching sessions delivered by trained sports coaches, delivered during lunch time lunch time and after school. There is an after school football club with a team that competes in local competitive fixtures. Christ Church pupils are encouraged to participate in the Daily Mile, and all are invited to walk to school on a Wednesday to promote healthy living outside of the school. A healthy lifestyle is taught through PSHE in all years, building on prior knowledge from EYFS, which supports the delivery of the PE provision. All teachers deliver inclusive PE lessons through Complete PE, which enables us to adapt, include, teach, and assess.
Impact
We want to ensure that our pupils leave Christ Church having a love of sport and physical activity both in and out of school, with this continuing into later life. Pupils will have worked on their own aspirations in relation to PE and this will be carried on after leaving KS2, with children continuing to participate for enjoyment or competitively. All pupils should be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved as well as developed skills that underpin life such as teamwork, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence.
