Art Intent

At Christ Church our art curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Art at Christ Church is an important part of developing our children’s ability to enhance their individual creativity, express their ideas and understanding and to work both individually and collaboratively.

Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3d work, and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

In art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. Art enables the children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner and through exploration. All children are challenged in the art curriculum to reach their full potential. Art will also develop student’s individuality, allowing them to think and express themselves with confidence, equipping them with essential life skills. Pupils are involved in arts projects which result in them responding positively and creatively to the community.

Autumn 2021

It has been wonderful to see the many exciting art works the children have been producing over the Autumn term. The children have been exploring a wonderfully wide range of media including; developing their drawing skills and clay work. A number of art works have been inspired by Remembrance week with Years 5 and 6 producing some wonderful paintings and prints inspired by poppies. More recently, children from across the school were inspired by the Mayor of Bexley's Christmas card competition. Here are a sample of some of the entries.

Christmas Card Competition

In the lead up to Christmas, our children were set a task. The Mayor of Bexley was looking for someone to design a new Christmas card for him! The winner received a £20 Amazon gift card.  The children of Christ Church focussed on a piece of art by Henri Matisse named 'Christmas Eve' for inspiration. Reflecting on this piece, Matisse said, “I would like to accomplish that people who are tired, strained, broken may find rest and peace in my paintings.” This piece is an explosion of colours and stars that offers something for everyone. The original title of the piece is in French “Nuit de Noel”. The children completed this in class and we could see some amazing designs the children came up with.
