Winchester's June Blog

English

In English we started the month by looking at the book 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'. We looked at the repeating phrases in the story such as 'We're going on a bear hunt, We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared.' We innovated different parts to the story and changed the things we would find along the way. We then moved on to look at the book 'The Highway Rat' and we discussed character and setting descriptions. We also innovated this story so that the story took place in somewhere other than the highway and the character also changed from a rat to other animals such as crabs, sharks, horses and cheetahs.

Maths

In maths we have been looking at partitioning numbers up to 100. We looked at how many tens and ones in a range of numbers. We identified that 57 has 5 tens and 7 ones and 89 has 8 tens and 9 tens. We then moved on to looking at finding half and one quarter of a quantity, shape and objects. The children used the four different operations to support their learning. They used the part-part whole model, the bar model, bead strings and colouring a given amount to find the answer.

Erith Fire Station

We were lucky enough to visit Erith Fire station and we were able to look at all the parts to the fire engine. Fireman Sam spoke to us all about how to keep safe and what to do if we are worried or find ourselves in an emergency. We looked at fire alarms and how to keep ourselves safe in our homes. We all had a turn at squirting the fire hose at a tall building.
