September 2022

Welcome to our September blog! We are excited to show you what we have been doing since the start of our new school year!

English:

In English, we have been reading the book ‘Leon and the Place Between’, which deals with a boy’s encounter at a circus with a magician, and his secret box that houses a strange world where all of his magical tricks are housed. The students have been encouraged to envision what it would be like to find yourself in this magical world, and write creative narratives about what they would feel and experience in Leon’s situation. We are focusing on speech between characters, and using inverted commas correctly.

Maths

In Maths, we have recapping the student’s knowledge of place values, up to the thousandths place. We are using our knowledge of place values to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000, and estimate sums and differences.

We are also working with addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers, using exchanges, and checking our solutions using the inverse method.

Science

In science, we started out learning about the different types of teeth that we have, and how they are used in different ways for the different things that we eat.

We have also been looking at the different parts of our digestive system, understanding that the whole process takes place through one long tube. The students had the opportunity to take part in a fun but messy experiment that modelled the digestion of some banana and cream crackers, using orange juice to represent our stomach acid.

PESHR

In PESHR we first established the class rules for the year that we all contributed to and agreed on. We then learnt about how we can show values of respect to our classmates and teachers. Our school has been focusing on respect this term, and we had students contribute to a display that shows how we can show respect to everybody, and why it is important.
