Winchester Remembers

For Remembrance Day, Winchester have been learning about why poppies are associated with remembrance. We have discussed that poppies were the first thing to grow back on the battlefield after the First World War in 1918. We have also discussed that this year, Remembrance Day marks 100 years since the end of the First World War.

In class, Winchester have been looking at the unoffical Christmas truce that took place on Christmas Eve 1914. The children have learnt that on Christmas Eve the soldiers called a truce and played a game of football with each other. The children have also learnt that the soldiers shared their food and drink with each other. Some soldiers took a button of their uniform and swapped it with other soldiers.
